The first Rugby League game I saw was one of the best games that is feted as one of the best ever; the 1985 Challenge Cup Final between Wigan and Hull at Wembley.
I didn't go to any more Wigan games for a few years but a friend, who used to play both Rugby and Football in the street with, joined Hindley ARLFC and I went along with him.
I was eight years old when I played my first game. It was for the Under 9's and I played a year above my age group. I think I did OK in that game - made a few decent tackles - and they asked me to come back. It just went on from there really. The funny thing is that I was a Centre in thoses days because, believe it or not, I had a bit of pace!! That was until I hit puberty and everyone else went past me!! I gradually moved more inside and when I was about eleven I moved to Stand Off and a couple of years after that I made the switch to Scrum Half and I have been there ever since.
I've always been able to kick a ball. When I was younger I also played football and I think that helped me but I have always had that naturalk timing you need as a kicker. I was quite well known for my goal kicking as a youngster.
I was selected for Lancashire in my first season at Under 9's. I played half a game on the wing and remember scoring a try. I got picked for Lancashire every year after that until I was sixteen and I also played for the Wigan Town Team, as it was known then. They had a team at Under 11's, 13's 15's and 16's and I played for them at all those levels.
